In this article you will find an updated list of the most interesting events in the province of Lecce in 2022. If you are planning your holiday in Salento, you won’t want to miss out on the fun? That’s why you absolutely must discover events, festivals, fairs and many other activities to fully immerse yourself in Salento’s traditions and experience an unforgettable journey!

Salento and folklore
As is well known, Salento is the land of the Pizzica, an ancient, unique dance. History dates it to the early 19th century during the Bourbon kingdom, while the most erudite date it to the year 1000. First used to cure the pizzicati, today it is a popular folk dance of Salento.
Retaining all its spiritual energy, over time it has been enriched with sounds and language, so much so that many Pizzica groups have flourished. During summer in Salento, it is possible to admire pizzica performances at festivals or village fairs, but the highest expression of this ancient tradition is found in the now famous Notte della Taranta in Melpignano, where thousands of people gather every year during the month of August to dance and get wild to the rhythm of the pizzica.
This internationally renowned Salento event hosts many artists such as Al Bano, Madame, Il Volo, Fiorella Mannoia and many others every year, all broadcast live by the RAI.
Here we can be enraptured by the best of the pizzica dancers, as well as by the music of its orchestra made up of talented maestros. It goes on until late into the night, lulled by this incredible magic. The Notte della Taranta 2022 will be on August 27th in Melpignano, don’t miss it!
Events in Salento – The Notte della Taranta – Photo By Paride81
The event is not only about dance and pizzica, but also about songs of Salento folk music. Here, Salento changes its appearance again, returning to the rural culture and to those songs, so old that they have no author.
The melody is simple, the content, on the other hand, expresses the anger and fatigue of a human condition dictated by poverty and the need to work a land which is not their own as slaves.
One could make a parallel, even though a bit far-fetched, with the Blues and the cotton pickers of the American southern states.
Clearly, the lyrics are strictly in popular Salento dialect, with some hints of Griko, a dialect of the Greek language spoken in the area of the Grecia Salentina, a handful of municipalities located on the Adriatic side of Salento, evidence, once again, of our past.
In addition to local artists, organisers rely on national and international artists, making the event a Notte dei Popoli (Night of Peoples).
Events and Festivals in Salento
An old saying states that “man is what he eats”, and we can say, in fact, that festivals in the Salento are the most authentic expression of typical Salento cuisine. Festivals and fairs in Salento are organised throughout the year to keep tradition alive. Summer, however, is the heyday for cultural and folkloric events, concerts, festivals, and much more. In short, you won’t have time to get bored; in fact, you’ll be spoilt for choice!
Events and Festivals in Salento 2022
Like the markets in Salento, Salento festivals and fairs are a moment of aggregation where local products become protagonists, together with music, dance and moments of conviviality. Over the past two years, unfortunately, we have had to give up these pleasant events that deeply characterise our land, but we will slowly return to the enthusiasm and desire for fun with many events and festivals in Salento.
