The most frequented area in the summer is Santa Maria di Leuca, a hamlet of Castrignano del Capo, an enchanted place where the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea meet.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19586 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hdsalento.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/20171222_113649-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"I Borghi pi\u00f9 belli del Salento - Castrignano del Capo\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Castrignano del Capo has numerous caves scattered along the coast and of particular importance is the \u201cPorcinara\u201d cave, famous for the discovery of Greek and Latin epigraphs inside it.<\/p>\n<h3>Gallipoli<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Gallipoli<\/strong> is another uniquely beautiful town, characterised by a historical centre full of narrow, winding alleys. Gallipoli is a small town surrounded by the sea, shaped like an islet and connected by a bridge to the mainland. Evidence of the Turkish invasions of Otranto, which attempted to take it over on several occasions, can be found in the two watchtowers and the wonderful <strong>\u201cBaia dei Turchi\u201d<\/strong> beach.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19588 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hdsalento.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Otranto__22250783216-1024x707.jpg\" alt=\"I Borgi pi\u00f9 Belli del Salento - Borgo antico di Otranto\" width=\"1024\" height=\"707\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>You enter the town through the imposing Porta Alfonsina and from here, crossing the walls, you enter the historic centre where the Aragonese Castle, now the site of numerous art exhibitions, is located.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19502 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hdsalento.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Castello_Castro1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Castro marina - Castello Aragonese di castro\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3>Castro<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Castro<\/strong> is one of the most visually appealing villages and fascinates tourists especially with its small, white houses set one on top of the other. The town is divided into two areas: <strong>Castro Marina<\/strong> near the sea and the harbour, and <strong>Castro Superiore<\/strong>, the older area.<\/p>\n<p>Castro Marina has no beaches, but typical rocky inlets and caves. One of the most famous caves is the <strong>Grotta di Zinzulusa<\/strong>, very scenic due to its large opening to the sea that can be reached via a footbridge that runs along the coast.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19503 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hdsalento.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/GrottaZinzulusa-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"Castro Marina - Grotta Zinzulusa\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The name of the cave derives from the dialect term \u201czinzuli\u201d referring to the enormous stalactites that can be admired inside it.<\/p>\n<h2>Places to visit in Salento: Characteristic villages rich in history<\/h2>\n<h3>Calimera<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Calimera<\/strong> is another spectacular village in the Salento, located a few kilometres from Lecce, belonging to the Grecia Salentina, i.e. a group of towns, which should absolutely be visited in Salento, that were influenced by the Greeks.<\/p>\n<p>Still surviving today in <strong>Calimera<\/strong>, which from the Greek Kalimera means \u201cgood morning\u201d, is a dialect now recognised as a real language, \u201cgriko\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Specchia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Specchia<\/strong>, another village in Salento that is part of the list of the <strong>most beautiful villages in Italy<\/strong>, in my opinion one of the most beautiful villages in the Salento, has a historical centre full of narrow streets with dry stone walls and flights of steps.
