Whichever direction one decides to move, there is no shortage of caves along the wild coastline as well as opportunities for snorkelling and diving.

If you decide to venture out by boat there are two excursions that absolutely must be done and will steal your heart.

Venturing from Santa Maria di Leuca towards the West, the first naturalistic treasure is the small Grotta di Mesciu Gianni, just after Punta Ristola, followed then by the Grotta del Fiume (River Cave); this is actually composed of a set of several interconnected cavities between which flows a rivulet of fresh water that here meets and embraces the waters of the sea.

In addition to the structural peculiarity, what is breathtaking is the historical evidence that emerges here with remains of prehistoric art.
Next is the Grotta del Presepe (Nativity scene cave), famous for the unique limestone formations inside, which are astonishing because they are shaped by water as if to form a representation of the nativity.

Finally, the Grotta Gigante (Giant Cave), also rich in memories and signs of the passage of ancient peoples. Remains from the Palaeolithic era are found here. Its historical importance is also recognized by its name, which echoes ancient legends. Indeed, it was believed that giants defeated by Hercules were buried here.
Some also mention the Grotta del Diavolo (Devil’s Cave) in Leuca, but we will focus on it in a specific article.

Boat trips to Otranto: what to see?

It includes the stretch from Santa Maria di Leuca up towards the Adriatic Sea, to Otranto.

The first treasure chest is the Grotta degli Indiani (Cave of the Indians), which recalls to our eyes, thanks to its peculiar structure, precisely a three-cavity tent; this is followed by the Grotta dei gabbiani (Cave of the Seagulls), chosen as a home by these birds, and unique and unmistakable for the stalactite structures found inside.
The Grotta della Verdusella, with its crystal-clear seabed and water in a thousand shades of blue, opens up before our eyes and leaves us breathless.

Boat trip to the Grotta della Zinzulusa in Castro

Finally, the Grotta della Zinzulusa (Zinzulusa Cave), from the dialect meaning rag, is characterised by enormous stalactites hanging from the ceiling like huge drying rags.
Each of these caves deserves to be discovered, both for their rare beauty and for the story that each one holds, as if they were real rock books telling us a fairytale. These caves are magical and intoxicating places, evidence of unique natural phenomena, from which to be inspired.

https://www.hdsalento.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/salento-5375530_1920.jpg

Are you thinking about a boat tour in Salento?
