Leverano is an Italian municipality located in Puglia, in the province of Lecce. The town is located in the Salento hinterland, <\/span>a few kilometers from the Ionian coast<\/b> , and is easily accessible both by car and public transport. It borders to the north with the municipalities of Veglie and Carmiano, to the east with the municipalities of Copertino and Arnesano, to the south and west with the municipality of Nard\u00f2. Its strategic position makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the <\/span>beauties of Salento<\/b>, including the historic cities of span>Lecce, Copertino, Galatina,<\/b> but also the wonderful beaches and many other fascinating places.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Leverano is a small town in the province of Lecce on a human scale, small, but well located and equipped. In fact, although it has only 13,695 inhabitants, it has numerous shops, bars, restaurants and clubs, and is just a few kilometers from Lecce and the marinas.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Leverano boasts a thousand-year history, which supposedly began in the 6th century AD, when the Greeks took refuge in the area after the destruction of some of their settlements by Totila, king of the Huns.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Subsequently, in the 9th century, Leverano was hit hard by the incursion of the Saracens, but was then rebuilt by the Normans and equipped with fortifications at the instigation of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century. In the 14th century, the defensive structures of the settlement were further strengthened by the Chiaromonte, Counts of Copertino.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Over the centuries, Leverano was subject to various dominations and, starting from the unification of Italy, followed the vicissitudes of the surrounding territories.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is one of the most well-kept historic centers of Salento and in the spring and summer it hosts interesting events for which it transforms into a romantic, lively and colorful setting. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Matrix Church of the Santissima Annunziata<\/b>: Built between 1582 and 1603, the church suffered serious damage in the earthquake of 1743 and was renovated in 1747. Inside, there are several valuable artistic elements, such as the eighteenth-century altars dedicated to the Souls and San Rocco, the 24-seat choir, the statue of San Rocco and seventeenth-century paintings depicting the Deposition of the Cross and the apostles Andrew and John.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and Convent of the Friars Minor<\/b>: The church dates back to the second half of the 15th century, while the adjoining convent was built in the second half of the 16th century.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Church of Santa Maria<\/b>: Small seventeenth-century building in Baroque style with an important altar in Lecce stone and a large canvas depicting the Virgin and Child between two Saints.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Church of San Benedetto<\/b>: Built in 1625 on a possible pre-existing fifteenth-century building, it preserves a papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 bas-relief of Sant’Antonio da Padova from 1919, a 17th century canvas with the Madonna and Child and the saints Benedetto and Antonio da Padova, a 17th century canvas dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory, a statue of the Madonna delle Grazie and a papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 statue of San Benedetto. <\/span><\/li>\n
      • Church of the Madonna della Consolazione<\/b>: Dating back to the 17th century and linked to the tradition of the miraculous discovery of an image of Virgin. The church was rebuilt in 1965 and was elevated from church to parish in 1957, requiring an expansion of the structure.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Torre Federiciana<\/b>: National monument since 1870, it stands 28 meters high and according to tradition it was built at the behest of Frederick II of Swabia in 1220 to guard the Ionian coast.<\/span><\/li>\n
