Where is the Tower of Sant’Andrea Salento?
The Tower of Sant’Andreais located along the coast of Salento, a few steps from the suggestive Lighthouse of Sant’Andrea. It is the southernmost tower in the municipality of Melendugno and was built in 1568, in the northern area of the cove of Sant’Andrea, with the task of protecting the small port that once existed there. Its construction was part of an ambitious defensive project that involved the construction of watchtowers along the entire Salento coast, all coordinated with each other to promptly signal the danger of pirate raids. The guards, through smoke signals and other methods, warned the nearby towers, castles and fortified farms in the hinterland, which had to be ready to defend themselves.
In 1578, the tower was further reinforced with a piece of artillery, thanks to the intervention of the mayor of Borgagne, Andrea de Jacobo. This increase in defense testifies to the strategic importance of the tower at the time of the raids.
Today, unfortunately, the Tower of Sant’Andreais no longer visible in its original form, as it was partially destroyed and incorporated into the lighthouse, which today is owned by the Navy. Under the lighthouse, there is also an ancient rock settlement, which unfortunately is slowly disappearing due to erosion of the cliff. This fascinating place, although unsafe, retains the charm of a past that is intertwined with the history and nature of Salento.
