Gagliano del Capo has an ancient history, dating back to the Bronze Age, as demonstrated by the two menhirs in Arigliano. After the destruction of the hamlets of Pulsano and Misciano in the 2nd century BC, the first urban agglomeration of the town emerged, as attested by sources and archaeological finds.
From 553 to the 11th century, Gagliano del Capo was influenced by the Byzantine culture, and during this period, the oriental religious rite was widely practiced until the 17th century. Numerous lands in the Gagliano del Capo area were owned by the Otrantina Abbey of San Nicola di Casole and were cultivated by its vassals. In 877, the town gave refuge to the survivors of the city of Vereto, who had escaped the devastation of the Saracens.
During the Angevin dominion (13th-15th century), Gagliano del Capo became a fiefdom of various lords, including Isolda De Nocera, Guglielmo Brunel and Mariotto Corso. In 1495, Ferdinand of Aragon granted the farmhouse to Giovanni II Castriota, son of Giorgio Castriota.
The village was fortified between 1413 and 1421, becoming a refuge for the inhabitants of the nearby farmhouses. In 1547, after another invasion by Saracen pirates, the fortifications were strengthened.
