What is the city tax? How does the city tax work and how is it calculated? Where is the city tax paid in Salento? In this article we answer these and many other questions to clear up any doubts you may have about the tax.
What is the tax and how does it work in Italy?
The city tax is a fee that every traveller is required to pay for each night spent at an accommodation facility, be it a B&B, hotel, holiday home, tourist village, etc. It was established in 2011 with the fiscal federalism reform, with the aim of obtaining a fund that is then reinvested in public services, such as transport or the care of green areas.
The city tax is not required throughout the country, but only in municipalities that decide to introduce this tax, usually the most touristy ones. In fact, it is up to each individual municipality to choose whether or not to introduce the city tax and its value.
What is the purpose of the city tax?
According to the 2011 Legislative Decree, therefore, the city tax is used to finance interventions aimed at improving the services offered to tourists, such as the maintenance of infrastructures, the enjoyment and recovery of cultural and environmental assets, and related public services.
How is the city tax calculated?
The city tax is calculated on the basis of the rate set by the municipality multiplied by the number of guests (without exemptions) and the number of nights.
Who pays the city tax?
The city tax is paid by the tourist at the accommodation facility where he or she is staying at the time of payment for the holiday. The city tax can be paid either in cash or by card. The establishment is then required to pay the city tax paid by the tourist to the municipality, usually on a monthly basis.
The accommodation facility cannot possibly be exempt from paying the city tax to the municipality, and in the event of errors or non-compliance, there is an administrative fine.
How much does one pay for the city tax?
According to the decree, each municipality sets the rates for the city tax, possible exemptions and the maximum number of days of stay on which the tax is to be calculated. As a matter of fact, almost all municipalities provide exemptions for children, the elderly, the disabled, tourist guides, relatives of hospitalised persons and police on duty.
The city tax, therefore, varies in value from €1 to €5, although in Rome it can go up to €10 per night.
Cty tax: where do you pay it?
The city tax, as already mentioned, is paid by the tourist to the accommodation facility where he or she is staying. Not all municipalities, however, provide for the payment of this tax.
