Usually, the community gets involved and willingly participates in the organisation of the live nativity scene.

But where are the live nativity scenes? In this article, we will look at the main performances in Salento.

Where are the live nativity scenes?

Live Nativity Scene of Tricase

Let’s start right away with the live nativity scene of Tricase, a town in the south of Salento in Monte Orco, a small hill full of olive and oak trees. It is considered one of the most sought-after live nativity scenes in Apulia, given the extraordinary beauty of the location and the hundreds of extras that perform in it.

The Tricase live nativity scene recounts the popular crafts of the past and the ancient gastronomic and folk traditions of the Capo di Leuca, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a timeless atmosphere, in contact with more than 200 people in costume, working as artisans, commoners and peasants, representing the nativity contextualised in Salento.

Its structure is permanent, and it is open to the public free of charge on December 25th, 26th 28th, 30th 2022 and January 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th 2023 from 5 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Live Nativity Scene of Castro

Another remarkable live nativity scene is the one of Castro, a seaside village on the Adriatic coast. A fascinating representation set in the Middle Ages, with characters perfectly interpreting the roles of ladies, knights and flag-wavers. A plunge into history and legend, while among the most captivating moments are The Witch’s Burning Mass and the beautiful costume procession.

The beauty of Castro, at this time of the year, lies in the peace and tranquillity, allowing to fully appreciate the true essence of this old fishing village, freed from summer pressures.

One of the First Live Nativity Scenes in Apulia

Among Salento’s most beautiful and important live nativity scenes is the one of Sanarica, a town a few kilometres away from Otranto. The area in which it is located is the Conca Sant’Angelo in Sanarica, and it is recognised as the first Live Nativity Scene in Apulia, in one of the most evocative locations ever.

Here the scene takes place, in fact, on a sinkhole of white rock with a small waterfall surrounded by centuries-old olive trees. An enchanting representation that takes us back in time amidst the scents, flavours and ancient crafts of Salento. It will also be possible to enjoy the show while tasting typical Salento products such as pittule and puccette.

The Sanarica live nativity scene will take place on December 25th and 26th 2022 and January 1st, 5th and 6th 2023 from 5.30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Live Nativity Scene of Specchia

Among Salento’s best-loved nativity scenes is the one in the Borgo di Specchia, a beautiful town in the Salento hinterland, among the most beautiful villages in Italy. Here, the whole ancient village dresses up for the holidays with lights, traditions and events, allowing visitors to experience the magic of Christmas.

The nativity scene will take place on December 25th, 26th, 30th 2022 and January 1st, 5th and 6th 2023 amidst the narrow streets of the beautiful old town, culminating in Piazza del Popolo with a huge bonfire (the Focareddha) that puts an end to the performance.

Live Nativity Scene of Strudà

Another Live Nativity Scene of Salento can be found at the quarry of Strudà, a small village close to Lecce. The Grotto of the Nativity is very realistic as it is dug into the tuff, the other peculiarity is the Temple of Herod. In this particular location, light lives a life of its own, offering beauty within beauty.

Live Nativity Scene of Scorrano

And now let’s focus on one of the most beautiful nativity scenes in Salento: “Sandy Nativity”, the sand nativity scene of Scorrano, a real masterpiece with its monumental sculptures created by internationally renowned artists. The exhibition will be held in the Convento degli Agostiniani every day from December 5th 2022 to January 8th 2023.

-Monday to Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
-Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
-Sundays and holidays from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon and 3.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m.

Usually, in the various Live Nativity Scenes of Salento, refreshment points are set up where people can enjoy typical Salento dishes.

Obviously, Pittule (which are a real treat when warmed up), panzerotti made with rice, pucce, calzoni cannot be missing: mezze lune with tomato and mozzarella, rustici and other dishes made with wild vegetables, according to tradition; and then there are tarts filled with quince jam, a very old but always appreciated dessert, all accompanied by a glass of good wine, strictly from Salento.

This is the other side of Salento, known mainly for its sea and beautiful beaches. But that’s not all: people of Salento are of rural origin, they live by aggregation, respect for traditions and for diversity of people.

A community that over the centuries has learnt the importance of tolerance and acceptance, embracing the universal doctrine that all men are equal regardless of skin colour or religious belief. So, Christmas takes on a mystical reflection, a discovery of ourselves and how we can improve, trapped as we are in our hectic lives that we end up missing the scent of life, the blue of the sea and the smile of the stars.
