Porto Selvaggio is located on the Ionian coast of Salento, in Puglia, precisely in the municipal territory of Nardò, in the province of Lecce. It includes the area of the equipped regional natural park of “Porto Selvaggio – Torre Uluzzo” and the Palude del Capitano.
The History of Porto Selvaggio
The history of Porto Selvaggio is full of charm and mystery. In fact, this coastal area of Salento has been inhabited since ancient times, as attested by the archaeological finds found in the area.
With the entry into force of the regional law of 15 March 2006, n. 6, the Regional Natural Park of Porto Selvaggio and Palude del Capitano was established, which covers an area of approximately 1,000 hectares. This Park unifies in a single area the Natural Park already established in 1980 and the protected natural area of the Palude del Capitano, already classified by the regional law 19/97.
The Park area includes three sites of community interest (SIC) Torre Uluzzo, Torre Inserraglio and Palude del Capitano, as well as numerous areas of archaeological and palaeontological interest. The management of the Park is entrusted, according to the provisions of the regional law, to the Municipality of Nardò.
How to reach Porto Selvaggio?
Reaching Porto Selvaggio is quite simple and can be reached by car or bus, but also in other alternative ways, let’s see them together!
- By car: take the SP 268 coast road and continue towards Nardò. Once you arrive, you will find a paid car park where you can leave your car.

The beach of Porto Selvaggio is a small bay immersed in the natural park and can be reached on foot, crossing the park, or by sea . All you have to do is access the pine forest, continue for about a kilometer on the marked path that will take you to the bay of Porto Selvaggio. At the entrance to the pine forest it is also possible to take an electric shuttle that runs along a stretch of road: the ticket is €2 one way and €2 return, but at peak times there may be a row, especially on the way back.

How big is Porto Selvaggio in Puglia?
Porto Selvaggio includes a protected area called the Porto Selvaggio Regional Natural Park, which extends along the coast for over 1,000 hectares, approximately 10 square kilometres, between pine forest, rocky coast and crystalline sea. Since 2007, the Porto Selvaggio Natural Park has been included by the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI) in the list of “100 places to save” with the aim of protecting and safeguarding the entire territory.
